必克英语人物之'光纤之父'高锟

导语:香港中文大学前校长、“光纤之父”高锟,2018年9月23日于医院离世,享年84岁。高锟早于2004年时便被证实患上阿兹海默症(又称老人痴呆症)。


Charles kao's life

In 1960, he entered the European central research institute established by ITT in the United Kingdom, standard telecom experiment co., LTD.

Doctor of philosophy in electrical engineering, university college London, 1965 while working for international telephone and telegraph company;

In 1966, the paper "optical frequency dielectric fiber surface waveguide" was published, which pointed out that the long-distance information transmission by quartz-based glass fiber would bring a revolution in the communication industry, and proposed that when the Attenuation rate of glass fiber dropped to 20 decibels per km, the optical fiber communication could be successful.

In 1970, he was invited by the Chinese university of Hong Kong (now known as the department of electronic engineering) to serve as professor and chair professor of the department of electronics of the Chinese university of Hong Kong for four years;

He returned to ITT in 1974 and worked as director scientist in the optoelectronic products division in launock, Virginia, and rose to engineering director.

In 1982, he was appointed the first "ITT executive scientist" for his excellent research and management skills, working at the advanced technology center in Connecticut.

From 1987 to 1996, Dr. Charles kao became the third President of the Chinese university of Hong Kong.

Established the department of information engineering in 1989 (which was incorporated into the school of engineering in 1991 with the participation of coates);

Established the department of architecture in 1991 (renamed as the school of architecture since 2009);

In 1996, the purple mountain observatory of the Chinese academy of sciences announced the naming of a newly discovered asteroid as "Charles kao" (international number 3463), in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions;

In 1997, he returned to Hong Kong to set up a high-tech consultancy service and was a member of the hksar government's technology innovation committee;


In 2000, the company invested and established "high-tech bridge optical fiber co., LTD." in tai Po industrial village, producing optical fiber. In 2003, it changed its name to "high-tech bridge optical communication co., LTD.";

Completed the English autobiography "A Time A Tide" in 2002 or before, and the Chinese translation by xu diqiang was published in 2005;

In early 2004, Dr. Kao confirmed an early alzheimer's disease and received treatment.

He retired in 2009 and was elected as an academician of the Chinese academy of sciences in the same year.

On 6 October 2009, the royal Swedish academy of sciences conferred the Nobel Prize in physics to Charles kao;

On 8 December, Dr Charles kao's speech on "ancient sand diaphanes" was written by his wife and four professors of cuhk and delivered by his wife;

On December 10, kao received a special arrangement at the Nobel ceremony to exempt himself from the etiquette of walking to taichung to receive the prize and bow three times.

On 21 September 2010, Dr. Charles kao and his wife, Mrs. Mary wong, established the kao charitable foundation to assist alzheimer's patients and their families;

Died on September 23, 2018 at the age of 84 at prince of wales hospital in sha tin district, Hong Kong
